full time Thermo-mechanical Finite Elements Analysis of the radial axial ring rolling process based on experi

bei Institut für Bildsame Formgebung in egal

Ring rolling is a versatile process to produce seamless rings with diameters from 100 mm up
to 10 m. The rolled rings are used in the bearing, aircraft, energy and automotive industries.
At the RWTH Institute of Metal Forming (IBF) an industrial ring rolling mill is operated in
order to research this complex process. Additionally, numerical simulations with Finite
Element Method (FEM) are also carried out.
By applying the Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) of this process, local values, like stress, strain,
strainrate, temperature etc. and their distribution can be investigated. Furthermore, the FEA
can be utilized for process design. Isothermal simulations in the ABAQUS-Software
environment have been successfully implemented for cold ring rolling. However, neglecting
thermal effects in the hot ring rolling process, may lead to significant deviations between
experiments and computed results. Therefore, the aim of this project is to define and
develop the thermo-mechanical boundary conditions of the hot ring rolling process and
adapt it to an existing FE model.
The results should be validated by an additional experiment. The report of this research
should be documented either in German or English.
