PhD position ETH Zurich / IBM Zurich Research Laboratory
bei ETH Zurich (Joint project with IBM Zurich Research Laboratory) in egal
The Laboratory of Thermodynamics in Emerging Technologies (LTNT) at ETH Zurich has an opening for a PhD candidate for
Advanced Microscale Liquid-Cooling of Supercomputers for Direct Re-Use of Heat. Joint project with IBM Zurich Research Laboratory.
The Information Technology industry plays a key role in the global effort to reduce carbondioxide emissions. The goal of this PhD project is to harness heat of high-performance computing systems and re-use it to obtain computing systems with eventually zero-net CO2 emission.
The PhD candidate will experimentally investigate the efficiency of a liquid-cooled supercomputing system where the consumed energy will be made available for re-use. High-performance microchannel-coolers will be built and tested in the supercomputer. The system efficiency and the temperature level of the recovered liquid will be measured and optimized while the effective CO2 emission of the system will be minimized. The designed high-performance computer system targets to set the MFlop/gCO2 world record.
We are seeking highly motivated individuals who are interested to join our multi-disciplinary research team and to help us extend chip-cooling techniques for cooling high power-density electronics. A Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry from a recognized university is required and candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
We offer a position at a top-ranked university, direct access to the international scientific community, and collaboration with one of the most renowned industrial research laboratories.
Starting date of this PhD project is June 1, 2009 or upon mutual agreement. Interested candidates should direct their questions and/or send a complete resume and a list of references to:
